Can You Use A Blender Without The Lid?

Is there anything you can’t do as a person? Like motivational speakers would say, “if you can think it, then you can do it.

So, can you use a blender without the lid? Yes, you can use a blender without the lid, but before you go ahead, have a bucket of water mixed with dish soap, paint, and a roller brush, and any other item you can get your hands on because you will probably spend the next hour or two mopping the floor of your kitchen as well as repainting the walls.

Blenders revolve with very high speeds and with the circular movement of the content inside the blender, leaving your blender uncovered will result in the contents flying everywhere as soon as you turn on the machine – now you understand the sarcasm in the paragraph above right?

What Can I Use If I Lost My Blender Top?

I know life can happen at times and certain things can end up the way it wasn’t designed to be. Take, for instance, you go to a yard sale, you see a blender of your liking, but unfortunately, the lid was spoilt beyond repair.

The stubborn you still decide to get it because of the knockdown price, you get home and plug it into a power source – hallelujah, it works! – the blade, the motor, the jar, and everything else is in perfect working condition, but then you are left with a big hole to feel and that’s the “lid”.
If you were in this position, what would you do?

Below is a list of options you can try to help remedy the situation.

Solution 1 –  Get replacements

What kind of blender do you have? Is it a known brand like what we have with the Nutribullet and Ninja blenders? These known brands are known to have replacements for sale in their online stores.

However, if the brand in your possession isn’t a brand name, and you can’t seem to figure how to go about getting the parts on google, there’s still a way out for you.

Solution 2-Get a round piece of solid

Try visiting an art store and get anything flat and solid enough to stand on its own; this item should exceed the diameter of the container.

Get a marker and trace the area occupied by the container, then get glue and a rubber gasket from any hardware store or try this one, attach the gasket within the area where you marked and you are good to go.

However, you would have to apply pressure on your newly formed lid with your hand when blending.

Solution 3. Using a saran wrap

Although I’m not 100% sure about this, you can use a saran wrap on it, then get a kitchen towel and place it on top while you use your hand for additional support.

For safer measures, start blending at a low speed, then increase the speed consciously until you reach the desired speed.

Solution 4. Use a waterproof hiking pant

I know this might sound very weird, but using a pair of waterproof hiking pants will help according to a particular user on a forum I stumbled on when conducting my research.

Use a pair of waterproof pants and cover the container section of the blender.
Use an elastic band in the rim section and continue pulling until that area becomes very tight – remember to put the content you intend to blend in the container before doing any of this.

Due to the vibration when blending, you would have to keep pulling around the rim area to ensure your temporary cover doesn’t come off on its own, and since it is waterproof, it would be very easy to wash afterward.

There you have it. if you have any more suggestions, kindly drop them in the comment section of this article.

A List Of Blender Parts

The blender is one kitchen appliance that never gets old or outdated. Below is a breakdown of your favorite kitchen blender to further enlighten you on something you are already used to.

1. The blender jar/container

A blender jar or container as it can be called is where you put your items for blending. It is usually placed on the motor or machine where you find the blade of the blender.

These containers or jars are usually made of plastic with a few usually made of metal. However, the more expensive blender sets are usually made of tempered glass with measurement markings to ensure content measurement accuracy when needed.

2. The blender container/jar lid/cover

The container cover is located at the top of the container and its primary function is to keep your ingredients locked in without it spilling around when the motor comes on.

In most cases – if not all – the lid or cover is usually made from plastic and is usually designed with a rubber stopper to keep the lid or cover in place regardless of how much the machine vibrates.

3. The center cap of the lid or cover

If you look closely at the cover of your blender, the center cap is the small plastic located in the middle of the lid.

This cover can be removed easily, but its real purpose is to allow you to put additional ingredients while the blender is still on without you having to switch off the machine or remove the entire lid and risk your mixture splattered all over the kitchen.

4. The blender blade

This is the metal item at the middle of your container that does the job of crushing and stirring the blender is known for. Blender blades are usually made from stainless steel.

In actuality, what you see are two different blades crossing each other at a slightly bent angle. A blade faces up, while the other faces downwards, and when the blender is turned on, these blades push the ingredients upward and downward respectively until your desired smoothness is achieved.

The blades are usually attached to the motor using a screw and a bolt to keep them in place while grinding.

5. The bottom screw cap

While many might want to think less of the bottom screw cap in a blender set up, it does hold a significant function.

The screw cap is sorely responsible for holding the blender blades in their position when blending, and without them, you would have the blades mixed up in your ground ingredients after grinding. Its material composition is plastic.

6. The O-ring seal

The O-ring seal is that piece of rubber that is usually flat and found sitting in-between the blender jar and the blender blades(Where Does The Rubber Seal Go On A Ninja?)

The importance of the O-ring seal cannot be over-emphasized as it helps to prevent the ground food particles or liquid from gaining access into the motor thereby causing damage. If you notice yours wearing out, endeavor to replace them as their replacements are usually very cheap.

7. The rubber drive clutch

The rubber clutch drive is located in two places in the blender machine setup. Firstly, at the motor of the blender, and then at the bottom of the blade assembly.

8. The motor of the blender

This is what makes it a blender in the first place, without the motor, the blender will be considered as a storage can.

The motor is what helps the blade to revolve at the very high speeds required for decimating ingredients in the container.  The motor is usually hidden in the base of the entire blender setup.

Did I leave anything out? I hope not! Kindly let me know if you notice any blender components I didn’t mention in the comment section.

How Can I Use A Blender Effectively?

Many persons are guilty of just using a gadget or equipment without first going through the manual. I use to be on that list until I discovered the importance of going through the manual of machinery rather than assuming when I almost got electrocuted trying to switch on my generator during camp.

While there are many brands of blender available in the market, they almost take the same part when it comes to operating them and that’s why I call this segment the “universal way of using a blender.” Below are the steps to help you through your journey.

Step 1 -Ensure your blender is clean

If your blender is brand new, you may want to probably rinse it to get rid of any dust that might have found its way in during storage, plus it also gives you the all-clear that all is neat – you have nothing to lose.

Step 2 -Plug it in a power supply

Depending on the design of your blender (some are rechargeable blenders and work effectively, this one comes highly recommended), connect it to a power socket but don’t put it on until you have all the ingredients inside the container of the blender.

Step 3 -Get your ingredients inside the blender

There are lots of things that shouldn’t find their way to a blender, and while I have previously written an article on things you should avoid in your blender (click here for more details), ensure you pour in a little water to the stuff you intend blending to make it easy on the blades.

If you simply just throw in solid stuff inside without any sort of liquidation, you will end up stuffing the blades, thereby, preventing them from rotating effectively.

Also, note that it is suicidal to blend hot liquid in a blender; this is because blenders generally make items they blend, hot, and when you combine this factor with the heat of the food, the pressure within the blender container becomes too much thereby causing it to explode and make a mess in your kitchen.

Step 4 -Cover the blending container with the lid and press down with your hand

Once you have added the ingredients and little water, cover the blender with the appropriate cover or use any of the suggestions I discussed above, use your hand to press down the cover to prevent the lid from coming off during the blending process.

Another reason you should place your hand on the blender as you blend is to make sturdy the jar. blending containers are often moved or shaken by the vibration created during blend and might cause damage to the to the round black rolling stuff (which is under the jar and on the motor top).

This damage also contributes to the burning smell we perceive when we use our kitchen blender (How To Prevent Burning Smell  In Kitchen Blenders)

Although some manufacturers will tell you it’s not necessary to hold down the cover, you can’t be too sure, besides, the manufacturers won’t share in the burden of cleaning up your kitchen when things go haywire.

Step 5 -Turn on the machine and start blending

Turn on the machine and start blending. If the machine refuses to start, then it’s probably because the base housing the motor is not meeting properly with the blender. Make the necessary adjustments and ensure everything is in the right order.

It could also be because you filled the blending machine to the brim – unlike food processors, blenders are only very effective when they are ¾ full at most.

Anything more would hinder the progress, and you would have to reduce the amount to half the size of the blender if it involves more solids.

The buttons are also essential to the texture of your blend or how it will turn out. Some are labeled as grate, chop, blend, etc. But generally speaking, the higher you go from left to right, the higher the speed.

Don’t let the labels stop you from achieving the blend texture you want. For instance, if you want a smoother blend and the “blend” button isn’t giving you what you need, use the next button to increase the speed.

But avoid the “pulse” button except you want to simply shake things up inside the blender. The higher the speed, the smoother the blend.

Once you are done, pour the grounded mixture into a container of your choice and ensure you wash your blender immediately after use to prevent the blades from going blunt over time.

To wash, simply pour in water into the container (half-full), then pour the liquid soap into the mixture and blend for a couple of seconds.

Remove the container from the motor, pour out the mixture and pour in fresh water to rinse the foamy remnants. Keep the container facing downward on your counter top and allow it to properly dry before storing.
